Beautifully written, gentle and loving, a great writer at his best. Cannery Row is set before WW II, and Sweet Thursday after. Do read them in the right order. Do not make the mistake of comparing Steinbeck with Hemingway who was a portentous blowhard peddling an ersatz masculinity in sentences too short. As the distinguished scholar and teacher Ignatius Quinn observed: "In Hemingway, the chest hairs are attached with spirit gum."
